Meet Dr. Richard J. Horwat, D.M.D.
Dr. Horwat Stays Current On All The Latest in Endodontics
Dr. Horwat earned his degree in dentistry from the University of Pittsburgh, School of Dental Medicine (SDM), in 2004. After receiving his DMD he practiced in the Annapolis, Maryland vicinity, focusing on general and esthetic dentistry for six years. He then went back to the University of Pittsburgh (SDM) and completed his post-doctoral training in endodontics and received his specialty license. Concurrent with his residency in Pittsburgh, he provided endodontic care voluntarily at the VA (veterans) Hospital and he was also awarded a certificate in recognition for providing care to underprivileged communities (children) in the inner city.
Dr. Horwat is passionate about endodontics and he is sympathetic to his patients concerns. He takes the time to listen to his patients and understand their concerns, making every effort to minimize anxiety and ensure that the patient experience is as pleasant and peaceful as possible.
Dr. Horwat enjoys his work and works diligently on his craft. He prides himself as a lifelong student, staying current with endodontic literature and its evolving philosophy. He practices under the most modern, proven, developments so that he can provide his patients with the highest quality care. He (as well as Dr’s Sandlin and VanDusen) incorporates a surgical operating microscope and 3-D imaging (CBCT) with every case, while utilizing the latest digital office technology.
His research regarding genetic influence on endodontic healing has been published in the Journal of Endodontics (JOE), Feb 2012, and he has lectured his research at various forums. Currently, he is a proud member of the American Association of Endodontics (AAE); the American Dental Association (ADA); the Tennessee Dental Association (TDA), Nashville Dental Society; and various local dental study clubs. He also donates to the Interfaith community to help support their provided care.
Dr. Horwat, as well as Dr’s Sandlin and VanDusen, is voted onto Nashville’s Top Dentist list in Nashville Lifestyles Magazine year after year and he has been invited on News channel 5’s OpenLine: Ask the Expert numerous times.
Dr. Horwat is the proud father of four wonderful children. While he mostly loves spending quality time with his family, he has a growing list of hobbies – Playing the drums, guitar, writing music and listening to (live) music, cooking, house projects, watching football; and any excuse to spend time outdoors.
Dr. Horwat would like to give the warmest blessings to Dr’s Scott Ulery, Dan Placido and Herb Ray. God bless you. You were instrumental in my success and I thank the Lord for making you a chapter in my life. I am forever grateful.

Patient Review By Marie M
I was extremely nervous about having a root canal, but Dr. Horwat immediately put me at ease. He showed me the Xrays and explained, in detail, where the problem was and what the procedure would be. He promised it would be painless and it was! Even today (the day after), there is barely any soreness. No Advil for the first time in weeks! I can’t recommend him highly enough and would never use anyone else!
